Menorca & Plastic Polution

Plastic pollution is the most visible example of the havoc we’re causing to our planet. From our local beaches to the remote Arctic, it is choking our oceans and killing wildlife.

Microplastics

This applies to any plastic product, once at sea, sunlight, wind, and wave action break down plastic waste into small particles, often less than one-fifth of an inch across. These so-called microplastics are spread throughout the water column and have been found in every corner of the globe, from Mount Everest, the highest peak, to the Mariana Trench, the deepest trough.

Microplastics are breaking down further into smaller and smaller pieces. Plastic microfibers, meanwhile, have been found in municipal drinking water systems and drifting through the air. * Source National Geographic

Calan Porter beach is clean compared to many beaches around the world but it too has evidence of plastic polution, there is not a dedicated ‘Beach Clean’ group in Calan Porter, just a few vigilant residents like Clare Beckman who would be happy to discuss this subject with any of our members, if you would like to help in some way we can put you in touch with Clare.

As lovers of Calan Porter we can all do our bit while on the beach, a few minutes can yield results and in doing so helps not just marine life but all life.
